If your washing machine is noisy or has increased vibrations, there is a high chance it is unbalanced, so here I will help you How To Level A Washing Machine.
Noisy washing machines are a pain, especially if you are used to multitasking while doing your laundry or having young kids.
Other than the noise, an unbalanced washer can lead to serious malfunctions like water leaks when the machine vibrates and agitates, breaks an element inside, or causes a bad odor.
Water can leak from the door, under the washer, or through the hoses causing mold, slips, and other financial inconveniences. How do you fix this?
What you Need for it
- An adjustable wrench/pliers
- A spirit level
- Four rectangular props to lift the washer (A brick or something with a similar shape)
1. Empty Your Washer
Empty all contents from your washer and unplug it from power if you were using the washer before. This is an excellent safety standard to prevent electrocution and any harmful accidental incidents.
2. Find Out What Type of Legs Your Washer Has
Washer legs can either be metal or plastic. This distinction will help you when choosing the right tool to use. With a metal leg, you can use an adjustable wrench, and plastic legs will need extra care because they are prone to breaking, and bending so use pliers.
3. Elongate All Four Legs
If all legs have retracted, lift the washer using the props to see what you are doing without exerting yourself. Then start loosening the screws to approximately 1cm each, then remove the props and let the washer stand on its own. It is easier to level the legs when you do it in small increments. After you remove the props, place your hands on the sides of the washer and try moving it from side to side. If it gives easily to rocking, then it is unbalanced. You can skip this step if your washer’s legs have already extended.
4. Place the Spirit Level on Top of the Washing Machine
It is good to have an execution plan when adjusting a washing machine. So, how do you level a washing machine; you can choose to adjust the washer from its sides or from the front legs to the ones at the back. This will determine where your level will be facing. If the washer is level, the bubble will stay in the middle of the tube. If your washer has a curved design, find a more level area on its top surface. The bubble will move towards the higher side on an uneven washer.
5. Find the Unlevel Leg
Follow the bubble behavior on the spirit level; if the bubble is swaying towards one side, then go to the opposite side. Using your wrench or pliers, start elongating the legs one at a time while checking the spirit level. When the bubble is in the middle, then the washer is level. You will need to turn your tool of choice clockwise to lower the leg.
Keep in mind that the shorter the legs are, the better. In case the legs have already extended, try making them as short as possible by tightening the screws. This has done by moving the wrench or screw anti-clockwise. Check the spirit level regularly for this step.
6. Test the Washer
After leveling the washing machine, test it again to see whether it still rocks. If your washer is new and still rocks after balancing it, then check the drum. Manufacturers lock the drum in place to prevent damage to your washer as they deliver it to you. It may have bolted in place, or there may be straps. Remove these and test again. Your washer should be good as new.
If even after leveling, one leg still hangs without touching the floor surface, then the problem could be an uneven floor; this is very rampant in old building floors. Just extend the leg until it touches the floor.
What Causes a Washing Machine to be Unbalanced?
Washers become unbalanced after some time, even if they are well maintained and stationary. Loading a washer can cause a washer to be unbalanced. Front-loaders spin faster than other washers, and this movement may unbalance the washers, so to be safe, adjust the level regularly. To prevent extra agitation, always balance your clothes in the washer’s drum. Don’t wash very few clothes, and don’t overload the washer.
Never Place a Washer on Soft Flooring
Soft flooring is any covering that can be rolled onto a floor’s surface. This includes carpets, foam, plastic, or rubber coverings. Soft floorings under washers absorb moisture, which is a health hazard on its own. The washer’s vibrations will cause friction, which will eventually cause tears, and soft coverings do not absorb the vibrations, which may eventually cause structural problems for your building. To avoid rocking, avoid unleveled areas of your house when installing your washer.
Adjusting the Washer’s Legs
Washers come with four metal stands underneath them for support. A rocking washer may mean that the stands are not on the same level. The stands can usually be adjusted to elongate by several inches. When moving a washer, make sure the four legs are tightened to the shortest they can be. If your washer is new out of the box, it will be fully retracted. It is easier to elongate shorter legs than trying to make long legs shorter. Besides, longer legs can break easily and will be more unstable. This may be a two-person job, so if you can find someone who can assist you, then this process will be easier.
What to do for Self-Levelling Rear Legs
Most washers nowadays come with self-leveling rear legs. They do this by putting all the weight on the front legs by lifting the rear legs a few inches off the floor, then the rear legs come down slowly until the washer is level. This process is usually automatic, but if that doesn’t kick in, then you will need to raise the rear and adjust the legs manually.
How to Level Older Washer Models
Older washing machine models may not have adjustable legs, and you will need to get creative and use cardboard or a stand to make them level. You may also need anti-vibration pads to absorb vibrations and reduce agitation and noise emission.
When you seek; how to level a front load washer, it will lead to multiple results, but what could be best for you, you have to determine according to your machine’s model and features. You can adopt different methods of convenience on your own and balance your washing machine.
